Zentai Martial Arts is a branch dojo of the “Bujinkan Goshin Budo Dojo” founded 2000 by Jay Zimmerman Shihan in Garrett, Indiana. Zentai Martial Arts provides the opportunity for residents of Fort Wayne, Indiana and the surrounding cities to study authentic Japanese martial arts as taught by Masaaki Hatsumi Soke and the Bujinkan Dojo of Noda City Japan. “Bujinkan Goshin Budo Dojo” and Zentai Martial Arts have provided authentic Japanese martial arts training to the Fort Wayne area for over 10-years. Each licensed instructor travels to Japan to study with Masaaki Hatsumi Soke and the Japanese Shihan in order to hone their skills and bring the most authentic training to America and our students!
Training at Zentai Martial Arts is supportive and non-competitive; emphasizing relaxed but spirited and disciplined practice. Students of varying skill levels learn and train together; much encouragement is placed on the senpai/kohai (senior/junior) relationship. The development of a righteous and courageous heart joined with combative skill is the primary focus of Bujinkan training. Every class begins with “kihon” (fundamentals), which include, “ukemi gata” forms of rolling/falling, “dakentaijutsu” art of striking with the body, “sabaki gata” forms of evasion, “gogyo no kata” five-element form, “kihon happo” eight-fundamental methods, “jutaijutsu” forms of grappling, “gyakute” joint-locks, and “nage waza” throwing techniques. After “kihon” we study different facets of:
- Taijutsu: Unarmed Combat Including Dakentaijutsu (Striking), Jutaijutsu (Throwing and Grappling), and Taihenjutsu (Body Movement Skills)
- Bojutsu: Stick and Long Staff skills with the Rokushakubo, Jo,Hanbo, Jutte, Tessen, and Eda Koppo
- Kenjutsu: Sword Skills with the Tachi, Katana, Ninja To, andTanto
- Sojutsu,Naginata, andBisento: Spear, Halberd, and Giant Battlefield Halberd Fighting
- Shurikenjutsu: Throwing Blade Skills with the SenbanShuriken and Bo Shuriken
- Kyoketsu ShogeandKusarifundo: Hook, Rope, and Ring and Weighted Chain Techniques
- Jissen Goshinjutsu/Shinken Gata: Real Fighting and Modern Self-Protection
Hatsumi Masaaki Soke was born on the 2nd of December 1931 in the city of Noda-shi in Chiba ken Japan. He began training in martial arts at age seven. When Hatsumi Soke was twenty-seven he met Osensei Toshitsugu Takamatsu, called “The Mongolian tiger”, the legendary teacher of Taijutsu who took him as a personal student. Every weekend for fifteen years Hatsumi Soke traveled twelve hours round trip to study with Osensei. Hatsumi Soke was passed nine schools of ‘Budo” (Martial Arts) from Osensei. Hatsumi Soke founded the “Bujinkan Dojo”, a school in honor of his teacher. Today Bujinden Honbu Dojo (the main dojo) is placed in the city of Noda – shi in Chiba – ken Japan. The Bujinden Honbu Dojo is the central dojo for study of Budo Taijutsu for all countries of the world. Hatsumi Soke has a Doctorate of medical osteopathy from Meiji University in Tokyo; he had a medical practice in Noda City until he retired.
Zentai Martial Arts is conveniently located at 5310 Merchandise Drive, which is housed inside Spiece Fieldhouse (see front desk for internal location)! Our dojo is reminisce of a traditional Japanese dojo, which provides the proper feeling and spirit for “budou” (way of the warrior/martial arts) study!
